With its unspoilt coastline and rare beauty, Guarda do Embaú is an eco-paradise. 40km from the south of Florianopolis situated in the municipality of Palhoça, it is home to a small community of locals and the many thousands of tourists that flock here every year. Renowned for its waves, Guarda do Embaú is considered one of Brazil’s best surf beaches.
Rated one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil, Guarda do Embaú is part of Parque Estadual da Serra do Tabuleiro – an environmentally protected area. It’s not just surfers who fall head over heels for the place, but artists and intellectuals alike who come seeking tranquility, peace of mind and harmony with nature.
It goes without saying that Guarda do Embaú is by far the most beautiful beach in town, Praia de Baixo boasting the best infra-structure. There are, however, several places worth adding to your itinerary: Praia de Pedras Altas (reserved for nudism), situated in Parque Florestal da Serra do Tabuleiro , Praia do Sonho, Praia da Pinheira, Praia do Pontal, Praia de Fora and Praia de Cima.
Parque Florestal da Serra do Tabuleiro is widely known for its plethora of flora and fauna. Inside is a zoo full of rare specimens and a display of the region´s flora. You will also find Morro da Cambirela, at 970m high, it prides itself on its gorgeous waterfalls. It’s also worth visiting Ponta dos Papagaios and Ilha do Papagaio, located between Praias da Pinheira and Praia do Sonho, and Parque Ecológico Municipal dos Manguezais. If you’re the adventure-type, you can go on an eco-trek up to the top of Morro da Pedra Branca, 500m high, where you will have the pleasure of seeing one of Santa Catarina’s most spectacular views.
